Carnival Hopes for Exciting Youngster

Stakes targets await Reliable Man’s gifted son Can’t Recall One who remained unbeaten after another impressive display at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The grey two-year-old had been a debut winner on the track earlier this month for Sunshine Coast trainer Stuart Kendrick over 1400 metres and he repeated the dose in style.

Reliable Man also made an impact on the domestic scene at the weekend when his son Chattahoochee produced a dominant frontrunning display to score at Tauranga.

Can’t Recall One drifted off the early pace and was still last at the top of the straight.

When rider Michael Rodd angled him wide, he lengthened stride quickly to overpower his rivals and went to the line untested by nearly five lengths.

“He’s a really nice horse and he was impressive the other day when he didn’t really know what he was doing,” Kendrick said.

“We wanted to give him this run to get a really good guide on him and when Michael asked him to quicken he put it beyond doubt very quickly.

“He’s been in work since October, so he’s done a great job. He has got a really impressive turn of foot and will only get better over further.”

Kendrick is already eyeing-off feature events during the Brisbane Winter Carnival for his young charge.

“He might just have a freshen-up and then races like the Sires’ Produce Stakes and the JJ Atkins are obvious options,” he said.

However, Kendrick is also expecting Can’t Recall One’s latest victory to reignite buyer interest in the juvenile.

“The phone rang last time so I’ll just leave all that up to the owners and they can make any decisions, but they have got a nice carnival horse so it will be a big call either way,” he said.

Can’t Recall One had initially proved a handful and surgery was necessary to settle him down.

“He used to do a lot wrong early and we had to geld him. Being a Reliable Man, we just let him find his feet and since he’s been allowed to do that he has turned into a different horse,” Kendrick said.

“He just keeps getting better and better with everything he does and we’ll see where we go from here.”

Can’t Recall One was purchased out of breeder The Oaks Stud’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale for $90,000.

He is closely related to Reliable Man’s G1 New Zealand Oaks winner Miss Sentimental and from the family of top-flight winners Complacent and Dracula.

The stallion’s son Chattahoochee was presented third-up over 1600 metres at Tauranga by trainer Debbie Sweeney and apprentice Ngakau Hailey gave him a fine ride off the front.

They slipped clear at the top of the straight and the five-year-old held a strong gallop for his fifth victory from 12 appearances.

Also bred by The Oaks, Chattahoochee is raced by Brian Black and Lisa Anderson and is out of the late Darci Brahma mare Auspicious, a half-sister to multiple black-type winner Kelantan and the multiple Group 2 placegetter Skysoblue.
