A genuine tempo paved the way for a career high performance from Torranzino at Caulfield where he triumphed in the G3 Easter Cup over 2000 metres.
The Paul Preusker-trained five-year-old son of Westbury Stud resident Tarzino came from back in the field with an irresistible finish to land the feature event in the hands of Celine Gaudray.
Torranzino had finished fourth behind top mare Deny Knowledge in the Listed Victoria Cup three runs back before he ran second in the Wangaratta Cup.
“The Cup didn’t go his way, it was a sit and sprint race,” Gaudray said.
Torranzino settled back of midfield on the fence at Caulfield before he was angled into the clear across the top and finished resolutely to claim the thick of the stake on a driving finish.
“We got off the rail at the right time and he went through the line nicely,” Gaudray.
Torranzino has now won on five occasions, three of them on the course, and has a further 12 placings to his credit.
“He just loves Caulfield and I reminded Celine of that just before he got on him,” stable representative Holly McKechnie said.
“If it’s a tough 2000 metres it’s his forte, he’s a horse that needs tempo in his races.”
Torranzino was purchased by Preusker for $75,000 at New Zealand Bloodstocks National Yearling Sale where he was offered by Phoenix Park on behalf of the Payne family.
He is out of the Helmet mare Goldilicious, a half-sister to the G3 Desert Gold Stakes winner Showbeel whose grand-dam Showella was the dual Group 1 winner of the New Zealand Stakes and Suth Australian Derby.
