St Lawrence rounded off a stellar Saturday's racing at Flemington with a commanding win in the day's final event, adding another success to his already impressive record and further cementing sire Redwood's standing as a highly established stallion in New Zealand.
The son of Redwood put up a polished performance in the Flemington finale, showing the class and tenacity that has become a trademark of his sire's progeny.
Redwood's influence as a stallion has been hard to ignore over the past 12 months, with four stakes winners and his stock consistently performing at the highest level across New Zealand and Australia. St Lawrence's latest win adds another significant milestone for the son of High Chaparral as he became the fifth of his progeny to surpass the $1,000,000 mark in earnings - a significant achievement in itself for the stallion.
St Lawrence was winning the ninth race of his career and is a black-type performer with plenty of ability. The win held plenty of merit on Saturday and should set the gelding up nicely for some of the lucrative spring races in the next few months.
Despite some very good efforts of late, this was St Lawrences's first win since joining Gavin Bedggood a year ago, and he certainly looks to have recaptured some of his best form, with apprentice Logan Bates building a good relationship with the horse and producing a picture-perfect ride to run out a dominant victor at headquarters.
Fellow Redwood son Thebudgiesmugla has similarly made headlines in recent months, claiming Listed victories in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup and the Caloundra Cup under trainer Bjorn Baker, and is now heading towards The Metropolitan as his main target in the weeks ahead, while former Horse of the Year Sharp 'N' Smart, and the talented Queensland filly Nightline, are both back in work and looking towards the upcoming summer.
Astute bloodstock agents and trainers have the opportunity to invest in Redwood's next generation as he will be represented by twelve 2YOs in the Westbury Stud Ready To Run sales draft.
