The well-related Shawshank hasn’t taken long to make his mark from new quarters.
The son of Westbury Stud’s El Roca was twice runner-up when prepared by part-owner John Bell before he relocated south to Kevin Myers’ stable.
He finished third and fifth in his first two outings for the Wanganui trainer before producing a brave performance to win on his home course over 1360 metres on Saturday.
Shawshank bounced well to settle second away from the fence and finished determinedly in the run home under champion apprentice Lily Sutherland.
The five-year-old is a half-brother to eight winners, including Mosse who was successful on five occasions for Bell including a victory in the G3 Concorde Handicap.
They are out of the Gold Brose mare Golden Sparkle and she is a half-sister to the outstanding broodmare Parfore, dam of the Group 1 winners Tiger Tees and Terravista, multiple Group 2 winner Ball Of Muscle and the former Singapore Horse of the Year Super Easy.
The G1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Il Quello Veloce and the Listed Karaka Million winner Long Leaf are also members of this family.
