Reliable Mare Wins Again

Stand-out southern mare The Grey Goose was untroubled to add to her record on Sunday for trainer Jo-Anne Gordon.

As is her custom, the talented daughter of Westbury Stud’s Reliable Man gave her rivals a start in the Winton Cup before winding up powerfully to win going away at the end of 1400 metres.

The five-year-old drifted to second last in the running and raced fiercely on a slow pace before rider Rohan Mudhoo let her slide forward with 600 metres to run.

The Grey Goose was widest into the straight and let down strongly to post her fifth victory from 16 starts and take her stake earnings to more than $245,000 for owner Morrie Paskell, who bought her off Gavelhouse for a meagre $2000.

“We have aways really rated her and spaced her races to get her head right, but she really has grown up now,” Gordon said.

The Grey Goose is unbeaten this preparation following her resuming victory at Wingatui earlier this month.

“It was the perfect run for her. When they straightened up, she got a lovely run through, and she came through her run fine,” Gordon said.

“Her long-term plan is to have a crack at that southern staying series after Christmas and it is looking like she will get over a distance fine.”

The Grey Goose is a daughter of the unraced Sakhee’s Secret mare Out Of The Barn who is from the family of the multiple Group 1 winner Tuesday Joy.
