Group 1 Goals on Niance’s Radar

Trainer Grahame Begg is looking ahead to elite level targets with Niance, who continued her impression progression at Caulfield on Saturday.

The Swiss Ace mare made all the running to double her black type tally with victory in the G3 How Now Stakes over 1400 metres following her success on the course in last month’s Listed Alinghi Stakes over 1100 metres.

The Gerry Harvey-bred and part-owned five-year-old also defied the pattern of the day with strong head wins unfavourable to frontrunners.

“I said to Jordan (Childs) don’t change anything, ride the race to suit the horse and they got the job done,” Begg said.

She began her career from Shaun and Emma Clotworthy’s Byerley Park stable and won one of her four starts before she relocated to Victoria.

Niance has now won five of her six starts from her new quarters with the only blip in her form line a luckless fifth at Flemington during her last preparation.

“She’s got a very good record and should probably be unbeaten,” Begg said.

“She just keeps on producing and we might give her a bit of a break now."

“We could then look at something like the Oakleigh Plate (G1, 1100m) and maybe take a look at the Robert Sangster (G1, 1200m) later on.”

Niance is the first foal of the Red Giant mare Cosmetic, whose dam is a half-sister to the G2 Apollo Stakes winner Alma’s Fury and the G3 Doomben Classic winner Enforced.
