Versatile sprinter Wewillrock continued his hot run of form with an effortless open handicap success over 1200 metres at Te Rapa.
Trained by Guy Lowry and Leah Zydenbos, the five-year-old has now collected a brace of victories and three runner-up finishes from his last five starts.
The son of Westbury Stud resident El Roca has won seven of his 21 starts on both good and rain-affected going and has placed at Group 3 level in the Almanzor Trophy and Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes.
He has also finished third in the Listed City of Napier Sprint and the Listed Bob Charley Stakes at Randwick.
Sent out a short-priced favourite on Saturday, Wewillrock coasted along in front and powered clear with a minimum of urging to street his rivals.
“Wow, that was a good win, he was just cruising all the way,” Zydenbos said.
“We would love the opportunity to get him over 1400 metres as the tracks firm up so there are races at the spring carnival at home (Hawke’s Bay).”
The G1 Tarzino Trophy is a likely longer-term target for the free-going gelding, who has also been cut to a $5 equal favourite for next month’s G2 Foxbridge Plate.
Wewillrock coasted clear on the home bend under apprentice Triston Moodley and they were in a race of their own in the run home, easing down to score by three lengths.
“I couldn’t hear any other horses in the straight, he just took me along easily,” successful rider Triston Moodley said.
“He’s got plenty of gears, he’s a very good horse.”
Wewillrock is raced by Waikato Stud principal Mark Chittick with good friends, the Hawke’s Bay-based brothers Mark and Paul Apatu, and was purchased out of Westbury’s draft at Karaka in 2020 by Lowry for $35,000.
He is a son of the Strategic mare Princess Michella who is a daughter of the multiple stakes-winning mare Wazawatsyn.
