Late developer Crouch delivered trainer Mike Breslin a pleasant surprise with his victory on top of the ground at Trentham.
The son of Westbury Stud’s Tarzino had posted his previous four wins on heavy tracks and coped admirably with a much firmer surface to deny his Rating 75 rivals over 2100 metres on Saturday.
“He had gone a couple of nice races on better tracks earlier in his career, but looking at his form I was a little surprised that he won,” Breslin said.
Crouch covered extra ground in midfield before he rolled forward across the top and held a sustained gallop in the hands of Tina Comignaghi to set up a crack at a Group 3 feature in a fortnight’s time.
“I gave some thought to pulling him out, but his main target is the Manawatu Cup, so he ran and hope we haven’t peaked too early!”
The five-year-old Crouch has required patient handling and has fashioned the tidy record of five wins and nine placings from his 19 appearances.
“He’s a big, raw-boned horse and he’s still got some maturing to do,” Breslin said.
Crouch was bred by Victoria’s Rosemont Stud and purchased by Breslin for $20,000 out of Mapperley Stud’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale.
He is a son of the Black Minnaloushe mare Oya, is a half-sister to the Group 1 Wakeful Stakes winner and dual Group 1 placegetter Thunder Lady.
Crouch was named after footballer Peter Crouch, a striker who enjoyed a distinguished career with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Stoke City and England.
