Rock on Wood to Dance to Tune in Herbie Dyke
Redwood gelding Rock on Wood looks well overdue for a Group 1 victory with punters and his connections both left lamenting of what might have been when desperately unlucky not to have won the Thorndon Mile Gr.1 at his last start. The good looking brown suffered a check at the 1000m mark and then found himself snookered away on the fence until the last 80m upon where he found clear air and literally flew to just miss third and miss Group 1 victory by just a half a length.
Rock on Wood is currently the second favourite for the $400,000 Herbie Dyke Stakes behind Australian visitor Luvaluva and faces a 3.5kg climb in the weights as he steps to weight-for-age and a further 400m in distance as he takes on 2000m. The relaxed nature of Rock on Wood and a good barrier of 2 should not see these two factors as issues and given the right run in the race he is sure to be flashing home strongly at the finish.
The Herbie Dyke has attracted a strong line-up for the 2020 renewal with Luvaluva, True Enough, Beauden, On the Rocks, Tiptronic, Fiscal Fantasy, and The Real Beel all have genuine winning hopes while the remaining runners Camino Rocoso and Gino Severini are far from forlorn chances in the race.
Redwood will also have his talented Group 1 performer Night’s Watch resuming for OTI Racing and Chris Waller when he heads to Caulfield for the CF Orr Stakes over 1400m. The good looking gelding has had two trials in Sydney to prepare for today and has gone extremely well in both, and while his outside barrier of 11 doesn’t look ideal, it may well suit his style of racing and Damien Oliver in the saddle is another positive which could see the horse storming home at the end of the race.
