Attracting and retaining talent to the industry is very much a key strategic objective here at WestburyStud, but, as Henry Ford best said “If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got”. So, for Westbury it’s time to change how we attract and retain talent.
This year, we have built two acceleration programmes that a redesigned to publicly recognise and inspire personal growth, by creating career pathways whilst building depth of technical skill. This is a carefully crafted programme that through a self-nomination process an existing team memberat Westbury becomes the chosen applicant. GAMECHANGERS as they will be known, will embark on a 12 month programme that sees them rotate within each department of the stud (including management) with set learning objectives for each area, then are seconded to a sister Stud in the Northern Hemisphere for an international experience and to accelerate learning. Upon returning they will be equipped enough to step up in terms of their role and responsibility within the Stud. The programme will also aim to become NZQA accredited, meaning the Westbury Gamechangers complete the 12 month programme with an industry qualification.
The second programme is the WESTBURYCADETS, targeting particularly school leavers or those new to the industry with a willingness to learn. They may have no experience with horses but a keen interest and an unstoppable attitude, whom we are willing to invest 6 months in, exposing them to the industry, trying out each department, learn life skills and what it means to be in the workforce. At the end of the cadetship ideally they will show interest in the industry and if suitable, accept a permanent position within the Stud.
“It is important to encourage and grow people in this industry," commented Westbury Stud's General Manager Russell Warwick. "We're committed to giving our employees every opportunity to develop their passion for thoroughbreds, develop a high quality and multi skill set, and develop a lifelong career."
The Gamechanger Internship will run from the start of August through to the end of July each year. To follow the development of the Gamechangers register your interest by emailing Libby O’Sullivan.
We are looking forward to sharing the success stories from the implementation of these programmes.
