Sire Review 2016-17

The southern hemisphere turned over a new leaf on 1 August with the commencement of the new 2017-18 racing season and it was also the day that saw all horses turn a year older, making the NZYC weanlings now officially yearlings.

The sires of the two NZYC colts finished the season with outstanding results with Holy Roman Emperor the leading sire for Hong Kong’s General Sires, by earnings, and Smart Missile Australia’s leading Second Season sire, by winners.

Holy Roman EmperorHOLY ROMAN EMPEROR

Holy Roman Emperor has been a regular feature among Hong Kong’s leading sires in recent years, crowned Champion Sire twice, first in 2013-14, and has been the second highest earning sire for the two previous seasons.

The Champion Sire of Hong Kong completed 2016-17 with the highest earnings, having amassed over HK$41million from 10 individual winners and 18 wins, while the second highest earning sire was Fastnet Rock earning over HK$34million.

His best performer last season Gentleman Only reached the pinnacle of racing in December when winning the Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Mile, while Holy Roman Emperor also saw multiple Group 1 winner Designs On Rome add another stakes win to his tally and basking in his first black type success was Lucky Year.

Sired by the great Danehill, Holy Roman Emperor has produced 68 stakes winners throughout his career to date, 32 being Group winners and 10 Group 1 winners including Designs On Rome, a four-time Group 1 winner in Hong Kong, Mongolian Khan, a three-time Group 1 winner in Australia and New Zealand, Sheidel, winner of this year’s MRC Oakleigh Plate, and many more.

The progeny of Holy Roman Emperor continue to kick goals as we head into the new season with already 5 wins from 4 runners in Australia and Singapore winner Magic City taking his third win from just 6 starts.

Smart Missile’s first three-year-old crop cemented the stallion’s position at the top of Australia’s Leading Second Season Sire, by winners, for 2016-17, following his title of Leading First Season Sire, by earnings, the previous season.

Smart Missile’s stud record saw him finish the season with 66 individual winners and recorded earnings of over $3.2million ahead of another son of Fastnet Rock, Foxwedge, and High Chaparral entire So You Think.

The young sire has had an excellent start to his stud career with a stream of talent hitting the tracks and is now the sire of four stakes winners to date, three of which came last season with 2YO Group winners Debellatio and I’ll Have A Bit, and 3YO filly Exocet, and winners have been bountiful with the likes of Smart Coupe, Special Missile, Thaad, and promising Hong Kong 3YOs Encore Boy, Rocketeer and Sam’s Love.

Smart Missile has opened the new season with pleasing results having already sired 8 winners in Australia in Smartedge, Special Missile, Missile Coda, Malkara, Island Missile, Kleva Kezza, Bombardier and Liffy, and Macau winner Sacred Missile has now won three from three.
